On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council presented the Uplifting Victims and Immigrant Safety Act (“U Visa”), which provides legal status to victims of certain violent crimes who have suffered physical or mental abuse and previously assisted or are helping law enforcement with the investigation or prosecution of these crimes.
According to MCPD, 121 “U Visa” applications have been received during this year.
Montgomery County Councilmembers Evan Glass, Natali Fani-González, and Dawn Luedtke introduced the legislation, which is the first immigration bill to be introduced at the Council since the 2024 presidential election.
